Word counter
Your writing, without the markup.
Load your Overleaf project or paste LaTeX. Strip out commands, comments and math, then count the text that remains.
● Processed in your browser. Your document is never uploaded or saved.
1. Add your LaTeX
In Overleaf, download your project as a source ZIP to include all chapters.
UTF-8 .tex · ZIP up to 30 MB · 200 source files / 5 MB of source text
Choose the file you compile in Overleaf. Only its text and referenced .tex files are counted.
2. Count the plain text
What gets counted?
Kept
Abstract and body text, section headings, captions, footnotes, list items and table cells. Formatting is removed: \section{Introduction} becomes “Introduction”.
Removed
Authors, affiliations, contact details, titles, keywords and publication metadata—even after the document begins. Also comments, the preamble, commands and definitions, math, citations, references, URLs, graphics paths, bibliography entries, code and figure accessibility descriptions.

Custom macros are not expanded; their definitions and declared arguments are omitted. Unknown commands lose their name but keep braced text. Conditional branches and unusual packages may need manual review.
This is a plain-text estimate, not a TeX compiler or an exact reproduction of Overleaf’s word count. Author and publication declarations are excluded wherever they appear; abstracts and figure captions are included. Words and numbers count; hyphenated words and contractions count as one. Character counts include spaces and line breaks. Nothing is executed, and no external files are fetched.
